Rules Would Be Easier

In Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis describes God as wanting "Not so much of your time and so much of your money and so much of your work: I want you." One suggestion he gives for the way to give oneself "comes the very moment you wake up each morning. All your wishes and hopes for the day rush at you like wild animals. and the first job each morning consists simply in shoving them all back; in listening to that other voice, taking the other point of view, letting that other larger, stronger, quieter life come flowing in and so on, all day. Standing back from all your natural fussings and frettings; coming in out of the wind."

I think I would rather just give a bit of time, energy and work and be done with it some days. Quieting my soul to listen to the other voice throughout the day is much more difficult. Being transformed from the inside out is much harder, and yet is in the long run the only way to find the life that is truely life, to drink the living water.
