Influenced

| | Comments (0)

Whether we like it or not, our ideas arise mostly from the influences we've had along the way. One bad conversation, brilliant teacher, ignorant friend, or judgmental church will shape the way we view the world. Perhaps we'd like to think we have become mature enough to evaluate these experiences, ideas, and conversations, but even our methods of evaluation are shaded from influence.

Nowhere is this issue more apparent for me in the present moment than in this upcoming election. Everyone has a different take on the candidates and, depending on whom you listen to, you will potentially be persuaded to see an alternate point of view. Having an open mind seems to be one of the more glorified virtues of today, but if you open your mind up too many times, to too many "influencers," what conclusions will be yours?

You're not going to take every viewpoint as equally valid. Are you? Having an open mind to all kinds of diverse ideas has a limit, right? In the end your opinion will come down to your evaluation of your sources of influence.

What credentials are needed for the influencers in ones life? Perhaps another blog entry...
